Trainee Engineering Technician

Just over two years ago Chris Kennett, an Engineer with over 20 years experience, set up his own engineering consultancy and is now looking to expand. You will work with Chris and get opportunities to meet and work with colleagues, and some of our clients and industry partners.

You will also get invited to occasional industry events which the company may attend or sponsor.

Job Description
We are looking for a person to take on simple daily tasks and to assist others undertaking more complex tasks. As you develop and gain experience, the work will change to reflect your growing skills and experience.

The work you would do involves (amongst other things):

  • Draw and produce designs using AutoCAD
  • Produce engineering documentation as part of the design process
  • Computer modelling with software and using simple maths
  • Checking, testing and working with traffic light systems
  • Studying towards a technical qualification and professional recognition

Working with specialist software and reference materials, you will learn to produce designs for pedestrian crossings and other simple sites. To accompany these designs, you will calculate timings and create engineering documentation.

Time will be spent on-site, working with traffic lights. You will learn how to check that the traffic lights have been installed to the design, and you will test them to make sure they work effectively and safely. Throughout this process you will be learning how to work on site safely and will be expected to demonstrate this at all times. This work will involve travel, mostly within the east of England but occasionally further.

You will normally work a 40 hour week, however the hours each day will be flexible and depend on our client’s needs. The job will be split between office and on-site during the first three years, but after that there will opportunities to work differently. Time for training and studying will be provided at work, but you will be expected to study in your own time as well.

We are looking for a person who will push themselves to learn and is committed to developing themselves.

The person we are looking for is:

You will be:

  • Prepared to work flexible times as required by our clients
  • Ready to work outside in all weather when needed

  • Always keen to take on new tasks and learn new things

There are no formal educational requirements, although an A-Level qualification (or equivalent) would be useful. You don’t need to have studied a technical subject before, but it will be required as part of your development in the role.

Some work will take place in places that can be hazardous, such as on live roads and construction sites.

The outdoor work is not typically strenuous but involves prolonged periods of standing and walking, including over rough ground. Indoor work can involve extended periods working at a computer. As you progress, you will eventually be expected to travel independently.

Key Skills:
Some basic skills will be expected to start with.

  • Competent reading, writing and numeracy to GCSE standard as a minimum
  • Computer literate to a similar standard

No previous experience is needed.

What we are offering:
We are offering a starting salary of between £19,500 and £23,000, depending on your specific circumstances and what you can offer in return. We expect this to increase yearly as you develop, and at least in line with inflation. You will receive 24 days leave, plus bank holidays.

As well as the salary, we will be providing inhouse training and an external training budget for three years. This budget can be used flexibly, so the exact training can be tailored to what you need.
